Crystal was released by Flesh on 20 April 2001 as a 12″ single by Corvin Dalek featuring Bernard Sumner. Catalogue number 7611-6 contains the Siliconsex Mix on the A-side and the Pornoclub Mix on the B-side. Both versions were produced in 2001 at Narodni Podník 2 in Berlin.
The history of the track reaches back to the 1997 instrumental Memories. An early version of Crystal was developed from this material using Bernard Sumner’s vocals, with Corvin Dalek and Mark Reeder involved in its production and editing. London Records initially withheld clearance for this early version.
Clearance for the Flesh release was granted in 2001. Two new versions were prepared for the 12″: the Pornoclub Mix was conceived as the main version, while the Siliconsex Mix provided a separate treatment of the same vocal material. The earlier version remained unreleased until 2014, when it appeared as Crystal (Demo Mix) on Mark Reeder’s Collaborator compilation for Factory Benelux.
