Young People

Young People was released by Flesh as a 12″ single on 18 May 2005. The track originated from recordings made during Corvin Dalek’s first tour of Colombia in 2001. Using a Sony Mini-DV camera, he recorded environmental sound as well as a conversation with Colombian DJ and artist Julio Montes, whose voice later became the central vocal material of the track.

Back in Berlin, Corvin Dalek continued developing the track with Jan Kessler. Alongside the spoken recording, sounds from the Mini-DV material — including insects, street noise and other environmental recordings — were incorporated into the arrangement. The track was produced in Logic 5 using a synchronised G4 Mac and Pentium-4 PC setup; Kessler developed a substantial part of the percussion structure.

A version of Young People had already appeared on the 2003 album I Am a Dalek. Two years later, the track received its own vinyl release on Flesh under catalogue number 7626-6. The 12″ release therefore continues the work’s documented path from the recordings made in Colombia through the album version to its standalone release.
