Lovetoys is one of the most defining compilations within the Assorted series and marked a turning point in my trajectory as a DJ and producer. Released in 2001 on MFS, the mix documents a live performance at Face Club in Guangzhou, recorded directly to MiniDisc and later finalized in collaboration with Mark Reeder. The set was part of a tour through Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou. At the time, I was among the first Western DJs to perform in mainland China – following Richie Hawtin and Mijk van Dijk. The performance in Guangzhou was a key moment. The dense atmosphere became the condition for the recording.

Crossing from Hong Kong into China was experiential. The environment, the sounds, the location, all functioned as part of the input. I had grown up watching Bruce Lee films; now I was walking through the same streets, in real time. My host, Nibing, guided me through the city.

Back in Berlin, I edited the material with Mark Reeder. The result was issued as Lovetoys. The title and artwork intended as a pointed, humorous reference to the erotic excesses of club culture – provoked strong reactions. The release was banned in Switzerland. Nonetheless, the compilation found its audience.
