HOTKUNST
HOTKUNST marked a key moment in the early consolidation of the Wet&Hard aesthetic. Released in 2000 on Flesh, the compilation brought together a curated selection of tracks that reflected the defining characteristics of the emerging style: a continuous interplay between techno’s drive and house’s physicality. At the time, I was resident at Berlin’s Excess Club in Kreuzberg. The sound was not yet formalised, but already present in my sets and early productions. HOTKUNST was an attempt to make this framework audible beyond the club space. The material was selected to express a specific balance: functional but sensual.
The title HOTKUNST was coined by Mark Reeder, as a phonetic play on “Hot Cunts,” shifting meaning through linguistic friction. The naming was typical of Mark’s contribution: coded, and precise. The compilation combined external tracks with my own productions, positioned as a clear statement. The sound was still in formation. HOTKUNST helped to define its perimeter. The release served as a formal entry point for Wet&Hard. The compilation became a static reference for a dynamic practice.
