E for Europe: My First Compilation on MFS
In January 1999, I released my first official compilation, E for Europe, on MFS (Masterminded for Success). This album was my “hello” to the music world. When Mark Reeder invited me to mix an album for the Assorted Compilation Series, it was the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I came to Berlin with one dream: to make music. Shortly after arriving, I began working in Mark’s office, stepping into the role of booker when his previous booker, Volker Mietke, left. Suddenly, I was juggling responsibilities as a booker, DJ, and producer. With E for Europe, Mark gave me the chance to showcase my creativity to a wider audience. It was my first opportunity to present my unique style to the world.
The idea for the compilation artwork came from Mark. At the time, the Euro currency was a hot topic across Europe, and we played on that association, linking it to party culture. The album cover added a touch of humor: instead of stars on the EU flag, there were tiny ecstasy pills. Mark also had the bold idea to release the album on MiniDisc, which he believed was the format of the future. He envisioned MFS as a pioneer in adopting this technology. In fact, we were likely the first electronic music label to produce MiniDiscs, which were even showcased at an exhibition in Cannes.
For me, E for Europe was a test of my skills. I was responsible for both the mixing and the artwork, collaborating with Mark on the project’s creative direction. The tracks featured on the album came from some incredible producers, making the project a truly special experience. It was a time when anything seemed possible, and that energy is captured in every beat of the compilation. Looking back, the MiniDisc experiment was a flop, but it was bold, forward-thinking ideas like these that made MFS stand out. Mark wasn’t afraid to take risks, and that inspired me to do the same. E for Europe remains a symbol of my early days as a DJ and producer. It marked the beginning of my journey and stands as a time capsule of that wild, creative period in Berlin.
E for Europe was the start of my career—a mix filled with creative challenges and unforgettable memories. In my memoir, I share more stories about that time—about crazy projects, Berlin’s music scene, and my early collaborations with Mark Reeder.
