Assorted Lovetoys (released in 2001 on MFS) stands as one of the most powerful mix albums I’ve ever created. The compilation was born during one of my most inspiring trips, spanning Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou. The pivotal moment came during my performance at the Face Club in Guangzhou, where I became only the third Western DJ in China to play, after Richie Hawtin and Mijk van Dijk. It felt like stepping into the avant-garde of electronic music.

Traveling from Hong Kong into China was like entering a vivid, avant-garde painting. The humid air, incredible cuisine, and vibrant energy immediately drew me in. As a child, I had been captivated by Bruce Lee films, and suddenly, I was walking through locations I’d only seen on screen. It was a surreal experience that deeply influenced my music. Guided by my host Nibing, I explored Guangzhou, gaining profound insights into the local culture and way of life.

The album was recorded live at the Face Club and captured on MiniDisc. Later, I worked with Mark Reeder to fine-tune the recordings and bring the album to life under the title Lovetoys. The provocative cover – featuring dildos in a humorous nod to the compilation’s playful spirit – sparked controversy and even led to the album being banned in Switzerland. Despite this, Lovetoys resonated with audiences and became a defining symbol of my Wet&Hard philosophy.

Lovetoys became part of personal stories for many listeners. Fans have shared how the CD played a role in relationships and friendships – proof of its lasting impact. Lovetoys remains one of the most significant works of my career – a testament to my travels, my music, and the energy I sought to share with the world through Wet&Hard.
